Abstract: Photonic crystals are dielectric materials in which electromagnetic waves with frequencies belonging to so-called photonic band gaps can not propagate. Due to this property they can be used as optical analogues to semiconductors. The challenging task is now to design a crystal in such a way that it has a photonic band gap around an initially given frequency. After discussing some basic ideas and notions for this problem I consider a special class of photonic crystals which are consisting of periodically ordered thin wires. It turns out that in order to answer the above question one has to investigate two partial differential operators. The analysis of them yields that I can design a photonic crystal of the above form such that specially polarized electromagnetic waves with the given frequency can not propagate in the crystal. This behavior coincides with experimental results. [hide abstract]
